Marcel Breuer designed the Laccio Table while he was experimenting at the Bauhaus laboratories with various objects, including different stools. The smallest of the Laccio tables was actually used as a seat for refectory tables. The Marcel Breuer Laccio Table series would later appear in photographs of Walter Gropius' house in Dessau. Marcel Breuer would market and produce the Laccio Table design, in various sizes and dimensions, while employed by Standard-Mobel.
Marcel Breuer was highly influenced by the de Stijl movement of the 1910s and 1920s. Such landmark pieces as Gerrit Rietveld’s Red and Blue Chair (1917), and his Highback Chair (1919), would have a substantial influence on Breuer’s personal influence as a designer. The flat planar design of these chairs was a break with the Romanticism style seen in earlier forms of wood chairs. This modernist style would carry forward to designs such as the Laccio nesting table.
